De Bespeelbare Stad (made together with Chantalla Pleiter) is an interactive environment that strives to awaken the Homo Ludens (the playing man) in the audience members.
To alter the environment, to build and to construct have always been some of the most important aspects of the human race. Our installation explores this natural tendency and allows audience members to build their own city in a physical way, making use of their eyes, their ears and their imagination.

This installation consists of a marked rectangular portion on the floor which can be "built" on. One can place buildings into the rectangle, which causes them to be heard through the four surrounding speakers . The quadrophonic panning correlates with the placement of a building in the rectangle. By placing multiple buildings in this rectangle, slowly a whole city can be sonically and visually brought to life and changed with god-like powers. Furthermore, a projector on the floor beams a constantly changing image of an abstract sky on to a screen behind the rectangle. The colors and movements in this image react to the buildings in the rectangle. This image is also obstructed by the buildings, which causes the projection to display a silhouette of the city, made out of shadows, with the sky on the background.
